    Overview

    Description
This collection focuses on US government documents as represented in NARA holdings, which were related to activities of the US Armed Forces and the OSS (Office of Strategic Services) in the Hungarian and Austrian areas just before the end of the war and after the end of the war. It includes documents concerning the work of American OSS operative Martin Himmler, who supervised a series of interrogations of a group of Hungarians detained by US forces in Austria after the war, but it does not include the protocols of the interrogations themselves; these protocols were not found at NARA. It also contains correspondence among US government organizations concerning alleged Hungarian war criminals, information on relations between U.S. and Soviet representatives to the Allied Control Commission for Hungary, some name lists of Hungarians who were in German concentration camps, and materials generally related to Hungarian Jews and the German occupation of Hungary.

    Provenance
From the National Archives and Records Administration. This collection originated after the National Archives of Hungary requested USHMM's help in locating the American interrogation protocols of groups of Hungarians who occupied important posts in the Hungarian government during the war and who were returned by US Forces from Austria to the Hungarian government in Budapest to stand trial. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Archives received the collection from NARA via the United States Holocaust Museum International Archives Project in December, 2008.
