    Russian-born operatic bass (1891-1978), who was active in Germany from 1915-1935 (Berlin Staatsoper, Wiesbaden Opera, Hamburg Opera), in Austria from 1935-1938, and the United States (Chicago Civic Opera, Metropolitan Opera) until his retirement from the stage in 1951.
