    Includes a two-page biography of Margarete Elkan describing her acts of heroism during the Holocaust. The essay, "My heroine aunt," describes the work of Margarete Elkan as well as the stories of Bertha Bennigsohn and Elise Katz. Both the brief biography and the essay describe the experiences of German Jews before and after the Holocaust.

    Dr. Frank Lowenstein is a native of Germany and a former medical student of the University of Berlin. He immigrated to the United States in Sept. 1938 and later settled in Silver Spring, Maryland.

    "My heroine aunt" was written in 1987 by Dr. Lowenstein as a tribute to the memory of his aunts, Margarete Elkan, Bertha Bennigsohn, and Elise Katz. Before donating the essay to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Dr.Lowenstein added a brief biography of Margarete Elkan in the form of a cover letter.
