Dr. Frank Lowenstein is a native of Germany and a former medical student of the University of Berlin. He immigrated to the United States in Sept. 1938 and later settled in Silver Spring, Maryland.

- "My heroine aunt" was written in 1987 by Dr. Lowenstein as a tribute to the memory of his aunts, Margarete Elkan, Bertha Bennigsohn, and Elise Katz. Before donating the essay to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Dr.Lowenstein added a brief biography of Margarete Elkan in the form of a cover letter.
