David Gerst was born in Poland. During the Holocaust, Gerst lived in four ghettos (among them the Warsaw ghetto and Terezin and was imprisoned in a labor camp, and Buchenwald and Flossenbürg. After the war he immigrated to Israel.

- David Gerst's memoir, "Memories of the years 1939-1945," was written in 1950. He sent a copy of it to Holocaust Publications in July 1985. When the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum acquired the assets of Holocaust Publications, the manuscript came to the attention of the USHRIA. In July 1993, a copy was acquired by tha department.
