Overview
- Description
- Contains materials from trials conducted in the Ukrainian SSR (Soviet Socialist Republic) during and after World War II. The material includes documents from pre-trial investigations by the Ukrainian NKVD (Narodnyĭ komissariat vnutrennikh del), as well as interrogation protocols, indictments, verdicts and sentences, and post-sentencing histories. For each trial, the case number, the regional office, and principal defendant are listed. The collection also contains investigation and trial records of refugees from East and Central Europe who were arrested and interrogated by the Soviet State Security Services (NKVD) for the illegal crossing of the Soviet state border, while escaping from the Nazi persecution in territories of Nazi-occupied Poland. Also includes several thousand criminal cases from the prewar period ( 1939-1941) related to the arrest and persecution of East European Jews who crossed into the territory of the Soviet Union following the German occupation of Poland. Most of the Jews who were arrested had been accused of illegal border crossing. After a short investigation and trial the majority of the arrested were sent to Soviet labor camps.
