    Biography
    Mascha Benya Matz was born Mascha Benyakonsky in 1908 in Virbalis, Lithuania. In 1931 she moved to Berlin, Germany, to study music. With Hitler's rise to power, she performed with the Kulturbund, an organization for Jewish performers who only entertained Jewish audiences. In 1938 she immigrated to the United States via Cherbourg, France.
