    Description
    The collection contains several hundred of memoirs, testimonies and diaries of former prisoners of KL Auschwitz-Birkenau, collected over several decades after World War II. This collection provides personal insights into the experiences of prisoners at Auschwitz-Birkenau. The collection is open, memoirs and testimonies are still being collected.

    The system of arrangement of the source repository has been preserved in the microfilmed reels. The memoirs are organized by author names and memoir title in 251 volumes.

    This material can only be accessed in a Museum reading room or other on-campus viewing stations. No other access restrictions apply to this material.
    Conditions on Use
    Any use of archival materials for purposes other than research projects required prior permission from the Museum and/or the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum. Users shall not to publish personal information from the archival materials including names, addresses, and other information identifying specific individuals, unless the information has been deceased for more than 30 years or is related to an historical figure or a current public figure. Otherwise users will publish the information only in anonymous form, except as permitted in writing by the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum.

    Provenance
    Source of acquisition is the Państwowe Muzeum Oświęcim-Brzezinka, Poland (State Museum of Auschwitz-Birkenau). Memoirs were contributed by former prisoners of the Auschwitz-Birkenau, written after the end of the war, and collected by the Archives at the State Museum Auschwitz-Birkenau in Oświęcim. The collection is open, which means that memoirs and testimonies are still being collected. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Archives received the filmed collection via the United States Holocaust Museum International Archives Project in April 2007. This is an ongoing project.
