Institut d’Etudes du Judaïsme transcripts consist of transcripts of oral history interviews conducted as part of several documentation projects regarding the Jewish community in Belgium before, during and after World War II. Betty Garfinkels and Max Gottschalk conducted oral history interviews with Belgian Jews and Belgian rescuers for the Centre National des Hautes Etudes Juives de Bruxelles (CNHEJ) between 1964 and 1973. At the same time, Rivka Banitt from the oral history department at the Institute for Contemporary Judaism at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem conducted a series of interviews with Belgian Jews, and the CNHEJ received copies. Bernard Suchecky and Daniel Dratwa conducted another oral history project in the early 1980s for the Institut Universitaire d’Etudes du Judaïsme (successor organization to the CNHEJ). Topics include Jewish refugees in Belgium, the German occupation of Belgium, resistance, rescue, hidden children, the Jewish underground, the Association des Juifs de Belgique, and the Comité de Défense des Juifs.

Two women, one who appears to have been saved from the Holocaust and one who appears to have lived in Polish society (not explicitly identified as Jewish) discuss the dangers of life as a Jew in Poland, the citizenry who looked everywhere to identify and denounce Jews, and why therefore so few Jews could be saved in Poland; and the climate of constant denunciations, fear, search for escape, and the dangers of ghetto life.

Rey, Troelet, Bloch, and Doney address members and guests at a presentation at the Institut des Etudes du Judaïsme, Université Libre de Bruxelles, honoring Max Gottschalk, who was born in 1889 in Liège, Belgium (TN: died 1976) and was a world renowned scholar, university professor, humanist, active labor leader, and international Jewish activist; guests cite Gottschalk's many contributions to the international labor movement, particularly as it concerned securing safety and livelihood of Jewish refugees displaced by the Holocaust; at the presentation speakers cite Gottschalk long biography, leadership roles in Belgian Jewish organizations, force behind the Institut des Etudes du Judaïsme, in particular; Gottschalk’s involvement in support for Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany and Austria beginning in the 1930s and creation of the Comité d’Assistance aux Réfugiés juifs, created in 1933 and led by Gottschalk, which inter-alia actively intervened on behalf of Belgian Jews after Nazi invasion; Gottschalk’s son addresses guests, recalling involvement of his father in the plight of workers and the international labor movement, focusing not on remuneration issues but stability of their jobs and spread of unemployment and his following in the footsteps of his father; and he emphasizes the commitment to saving Belgium’s Jewish population including influx of refugees.
