A handwritten sign reads “Eisübergang.” Men walk across wooden planks on the frozen body of water. Other views of the landscape. Walter Lenger explores a snowy forest. Men walk single file across the snow and towards the camera. Panoramic view of a winding river. Walter salutes another man and they stand looking out at the view from the Königstein fortress. Various buildings in the complex. Walter walks through the snow. The watchtower. Walter runs down a snowy hill and towards the front steps of a house. He walks around the perimeter of the fortress. He knocks down a snowman. An honorary portrait statue of “FRIEDRICH AUGUST KONIG VON SACHSEN.” Walter walks across the grounds with a briefcase under his arm. He puts a gas mask on and his hat on top of it. Soldiers march past the officers, saluting. Cross-country skiing. The sunrise. More skiing. Another view of the Elbe river below, partially frozen. Snow falls off the rooftop of a building. Icicles drip and break. Melted snow runs off into a stream.
11:33:54 Intertitle: “Das Eis der Elbe bricht.” The Elbe is no longer frozen as ships move through the water. A train rolls past. The water of the river flows along. Intertitle reads, “ Hochwasser in Königstein.” The Elbe River has overflown, flooding the town of Königstein. The men go through the town on a wooden boat. Walter takes pictures. The first level of the buildings have been flooded. People walk across wooden walkways. A truck charges through the flooded streets. More views of the river. End title screen: “Ende.” - Film Title

- Karl Hoeffkes has collected over 2,000 hours of rare original film material documenting the period from 1925 to 1946. The collection consists of mostly amateur footage in both black and white and color that focuses on Europe during the pre-war and mid-war periods. The United States Holocaut Memorial Museum entered a cooperative agreement with Agentur Karl Hoeffkes in April 2015 which enables the Museum to provide access to the entire AKH archive and use the material for future exhibitions, research and scientific purposes, and publications.
