    Interview Summary
    Paolo Fadda, born on March 30, 1930 in Cagliari, Italy, discusses his childhood; growing up in the same building where he now lives; the fascist indoctrination; participating in various youth activities; his father's construction company and his contribution to the construction of the city of Carbonia (a new town founded in 1937 to the will of Fascism to exploit self-sufficient coal); his Catholic education; the opposition to Fascism within some parts of the Catholic world; the industrial development done in Sardinia due to Fascism; the displacement in the countryside and the huge differences between Cagliari and agricultural Sardinia, including the level of poverty, illiteracy, and sanitation; the engineer Guido Segre, who was one of the creators of Carbonia and was sent away because of racial laws; the role of the Church in post-war Cagliari; the bombing of Cagliari; the post-war reconstruction; and the development of the various parties (communists and anarchists in Carbonia; Democrazia Cristiana which was helped by the Church in Cagliari).

    This is a witness interview of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum's Perpetrators, Collaborators, and Witnesses: The Jeff and Toby Herr Testimony Initiative, a multi-year project to record the testimonies of non-Jewish witnesses to the Holocaust. The interview was conducted remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic.
