    Description
    The collection consists of photographs and identification cards of Julie Waixel (née Heimann) and Julius Waixel, both of whom immigrated from Germany to the United States in May 1939. Photographs include depictions of Julius in prewar Germany, and in his United States Army uniform. Documents include German identification cards and passports. Also included are several prewar photographs of Julie’s parents, Albert and Rosa Heimann. There is a framed photograph of Julius’s parents, Alfred and Hedwig Weichsel. Additionally, there is a framed photograph of Julie’s paternal grandparents, Herman and Julie Heimann, that was damaged by a German soldier during Kristallnacht.

    Biography
    Julie Waixel (1924-2019) was born Julie Heimann on March 7, 1924 in Werne an der Lippe, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany to Albert Heimann (1894-1960) and Rosa Heimann (1899-1965, née Fromm). She had three siblings: Hanna Heimann (b. 1925, later Hanna Adler), Ruth Heimann (b. 1927, later Ruth Oppenheim), and Herbert Heimann (1930-2010). Julie and her future husband Julius Waixel (born Julius Weichsel) immigrated to the United States aboard the SS George Washington in May 1939. They married in 1944, and had at least one daughter, Cheryl Waixel.

    Julie’s father Albert was assaulted in Werne during Kristallnacht. He immigrated to the United States in August 1939. The rest of Julie’s family arrived in the United States via Rotterdam in January 1940.
    Julius Waixel (1915-1982) was born Julius Weichsel on May 9, 1915 in Rimbach, Germany to Alfred Weichsel (b. 1883) and Hedwig Weichsel (b. 1885, née Fuld). He and his future wife Julie Heimann immigrated to the United States aboard the SS George Washington in May 1939. He enlisted with the United States Army in 1942. Julius and Julie married in 1944, and had at least one daughter, Cheryl Waixel. His parents were deported from Hamburg am Main, Germany in 1942 and likely murdered.
