    Brief Narrative
    The Good Conduct medal was awarded to Arthur Schmitt during his three years of military service during World War II (1939-1945). The medal is part of a larger collection documenting the experiences of Arthur (Abraham) Schmitt and Meta (Miriam) Grunebaum Schmitt and their families in Germany and the United States before, during, and after World War II.

    Circular, bronze-colored metal medal, with an attached ribbon. It has an embossed, left-facing eagle perched on the flat blade of a sword and laying on a closed book encircled by English text. The back has a raised, five-point star above a blank scroll, with text above and below. Around the edge is a wreath formed by laurel and oak branches. The attached ribbon has 13 vertical stripes: a wide red center stripe flanked by a set of six alternating, narrow, white and red stripes. The ribbon is pinned to a blue, cloth-covered cardboard backer.
