- Description
- Consists of documents, correspondence and identification card illustrating the experiences of Pauline and Peter Eckerling and their son Herbert, and their efforts to flee Nazi-occupied Austria. The collection includes documents illustrating the arrest and deportation to Dachau and Buchenwald concentration camps in 1938, the release and family flight to the United Kingdom, Peter's arrest as an enemy alien in 1940 and transport on the ship the Dunera to Australia where he was held as an enemy alien by the British. The collection also includes materials demonstrating his transfer back to the United Kingdom and his subsequent death there in 1944. Also included is correspondence illustrating Herbert and Pauline's eventual immigration to the United States in 1940. Illustrated Yahrzeit [memorial] calendar to honor Peter.
