    Description
    The collection documents the wartime and postwar experiences of Vera Weissman (née Scharf) and her parents Edith and Desider Scharf, including their deportation from Žilina, Slovakia to Sered', Theresienstadt, and Sachsenhausen, and immigration to Canada in 1948. Theresienstadt documents include a vaccination card and a bank book (Bank der Jüdischen Selbstverwaltung Theresienstadt). Other material includes birth certificates, marriage certificates, identification documents, repatriation documents, and a personal narrative statement of Desider.

    Biography
    Vera Weissman was born Vera Scharf on February 3, 1937 in Turčiansky Svätý Martin, Slovakia (now Martin, Slovakia) to Edith Scharf (née Donath, b. 1906) and Desider Scharf (b. 1895). She had one sister, Gerda Scharf (later Gerda Slezak, b. 1929). Her father worked as a manager for a timber company in Žilina before World War II.

    Her family was deported from Žilina to Sered’ on November 25, 1944. Desider was transferred to Sachsenhausen, and the rest of the family were sent to Theresienstadt. Vera and her family all survived the Holocaust, and immigrated to Canada in 1948.
