Overview
- Description
- Consists of the official records of the appeal before the Israeli Supreme Court on behalf John Demjanjuk. Demjanjuk, born on April 3, 1920, in the village of Dub Macharenzi, Ukraine, was tried and found guilty in the Jerusalem District Court on April 18, 1988 as being "Ivan the Terrible" of Treblinka, one of three killing centers linked to Operation Reinhard, the SS plan to murder almost two million Jews living in the German-administered territory of occupied Poland, called the General Government. The Israeli Supreme Court, on July 29, 1993, found that reasonable doubt existed as to whether Demjanjuk was Ivan the Terrible and overturned the guilty verdict and death sentence. This collection is part of the larger record group RG30 Supreme Court collection at the Israel State Archives, which contains several court cases (see also: RG-68.073M: The Attorney General against Malkiel Gruenwald a.k.a. The Kasztner Trial).
