Lodz Jews walk through a courtyard filled with debris a short time before the sealing of the ghetto.
Jews in Lodz were ordered to move into the ghetto on February 8, 1940, and the ghetto was sealed on April 30, 1940. The ghetto was established in the poorest and most neglected part of town - Baluty and The Old Town (Stare Miasto).
