Studio portrait of the Markovits family in Cluj.
Pictured in the front row (left to right) are: Irena, Eva, David, Ilonka; in the back row (left to right) are: Simon, Jolanda and Andre (the donor).
The photo was taken on the occasion of the visit by David Markovits, who had been allowed a one-day leave from his Hungarian labor brigade unit. Immediately upon his return to the labor brigade, he was deported to Dachau. David was liberated in Dachau, but died a short time after, on June 20, 1945.
The donor, Andre Markovits, who was liberated from Buchenwald, returned to Cluj after the war and retrieved this photo from the photographic studio in which it was taken in 1943. Andre was the sole survivor of his family, who were all deported from the Cluj ghetto to Auschwitz in April, 1944.
