- Jewish refugee children wave at the Statue of Liberty as the President Harding steams into New York harbor.
These children are among a group of fifty Jewish refugees (25 boys and 25 girls) from Vienna, aged 5 to 14, who are en route to Philadelphia, where they will be placed with foster families. The children were accompanied by Gilbert J. Kraus, a Philadelphia attorney, and his wife Eleanor, who had worked for months to secure their admission into the U.S.
Among those pictured is Johanna Braun Gitlin (two, long braids). - Photographer
