Persecution of Jews in Hitler's Reich intensified in 1938. All passports held by Jews were stamped with a red "J." Fleeing Germany after the nationwide, Nazi-organized attacks on Jews and Jewish property during November 8-9, 1938 (Kristallnacht), Isidor Abraham's family emigrated from Berlin to Shanghai, which did not require a visa for entrance.
