Postwar identification card certifying that Erika Vermes is a member of the National Alliance of People Deported from Hungary. The photograph that is stapled to the card was taken in 1944 and shows Erika wearing the yellow star.

The ID card, which bears both Hungarian and Russian stamps, states that Erika Vermes was deported to Austria in 1944 by German and Hungarian fascists to perform forced labor. Erika, in fact, was never deported to Austria. She appropriated her mother's story in order to qualify for food rations.
