Members of the Jewish medical student fraternity at Vilna University. Jews were excluded from the Polish student fraternity and therefore formed their own. About This Photograph

Biography
Rosalind Rosenblatt (born Rosalind Foster) is the granddaughter of Nehemia Virshubski. Nehemia Virshubski was born in 1847 in the vicinity of Mir. Though he was born into a rabbinical family, he decided to become a "feldsher" or folk doctor. He moved to Eisiskes after marrying the former Feige Dragutski. Nehemia "der Feldsher" was killed during World War I after being shot by a Russian soldier while attending to a patient. His daughter Sonia Virshubski Saposnikow who had assisted him in his work and accompanied him on his rounds became a successful pharmacist in Vilna. His son Anshel Virshubski also became a pharmacist in the town of Ivenitz. Nehemia and Feige's other children all immigrated to America. One of these daughters Annie Virshubski married David Michalowski (later Foster) also from Eisiskes. In 1932, Annie visited her family in Eisiskes and Vilna accompanied by her daughter Rosalind Foster (Rosenblatt) who took extensive photographs of the visit. Annie and Rosalind returned to America, and Feige died a natural death in 1938. Sonia, Anshel and their families all perished during the Holocaust.
