Rabbi Leo Baeck (left) poses with Ernst G. Lowenthal (right) during his three week visit to Germany.

Baeck was greeted at the airport by Norbert Wollheim, Chairman of the Central Committee of Jews in the British Zone. Baeck's trip included participation in an evangelical congress in Darmstadt on October 12, as well as numerous appearances before local Jewish communities.

Ernst G. Lowenthal was born in Koln, Germany in 1904. After receiving his doctorate in sociology, he worked for the Central Association of German Citizens of the Jewish Faith from 1929 to 1938. He also edited the Journal for the History of the Jews in Germany. In 1939 he immigrated to England. A year after the war he returned to Germany, where among other roles, he served as director of the Jewish Relief Unit in the British Occupation Zone from 1947 to 1948.
