Photograph | Photograph Number: 58104

One page of an illustrated album produced by Gyorgy Beifeld (1902-1982), a Hungarian Jew from Budapest.

The album contains 402 drawings and watercolors by Byfield, as well as a narrative of his experiences. Top and bottom right images: The top image is a sketch of retreating soldiers in a snowstorm. While depicting the chaotic retreat of the Hungarian 2nd Army in the dead of winter, the artist may have deliberately blurred the details of his drawing in order to broaden its scope to include the French retreat from the Russians during the Napoleonic Wars. The image at the bottom right, captioned "Missing in Action," shows the body of a Hungarian soldier, partially covered with snow who has fallen during the retreat, somewhere near Gorki.
