Teddy bear used in an SS Lebensborn home.

In 1935, the SS-the racial elite of the Nazi Party led by Heinrich Himmler-opened the first of twelve maternity centers under the program name Lebensborn, "Fount of Life." Lebensborn homes catered to both wives of SS men and unmarried women of "good racial stock," providing neo- and postnatal care for mothers and infants. What mattered to Himmler was not the marital status of the parents but the racial fitness and potential value of the children to the German state.
