Reichsfuehrer-SS Heinrich Himmler (left) strolls through a village in the company of Waffen-SS Armored Division Wiking chief, SS-Brigadefuehrer and Major General Felix Steiner.

Steiner was commander of the Wiking Division from December 1940 through May 1943. Himmler may have visited the Wiking Division during his visits to Waffen-SS and Einsatzgruppe D units in Kriwoj Rog and Nikoljew on October 3-5, 1941. During this tour, Himmler ordered that gas vans be deployed to Nowgorod to kill the mentally ill. In conjunction with Himmler's visit, a teilkommando of Einsatzgruppe D shot Jewish women for the first time. [Himmler Dienstkalender, pp.224-25]
