Reichsfuehrer-SS Heinrich Himmler (second from right) confers with Waffen-SS Armored Division Wiking chief, SS-Brigadefuehrer and Major General Felix Steiner (right) during a visit to a village.

Steiner was commander of the Wiking Division from December 1940 through May 1943. Himmler may have visited the Wiking Division during his visits to Waffen-SS and Einsatzgruppe D units in Kriwoj Rog and Nikoljew on October 3-5, 1941. During this tour, Himmler ordered that gas vans be deployed to Nowgorod to kill the mentally ill. In conjunction with Himmler's visit, a teilkommando of Einsatzgruppe D shot Jewish women for the first time. [Himmler Dienstkalender, pp.224-25]
