Overview

- German Jews gather for Sabbath morning prayers in the synagogue in Breisach.
The tablet lists the names of Jewish soldiers from Breisach who died during World War I. It was destroyed on November 10, 1938 when the synagogue was burned down.
(Though it is normally forbidden to photograph Sabbath services, an exception was made for the purpose of documenting the community.)
This is part of series of photographs taken of the Breisach Jewish community 1937. In October 1940 the entire community was deported to the Gurs internment camp in southern France. - Photographer
