- Biography
- Ulla Dahlgran Knowles was born in 1924 in Stockholm. In summer 1939, she and her mother went to London, where she met refugees from Germany. Their stories made an impression on her. Her frustration led her to volunteer to help survivors after the war. In June 1945, she spent six weeks in Luebeck, Germany, caring for the sick and emaciated liberated prisoners from the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. This mission was organized by Count Folke Bernadotte with the Swedish Red Cross and UNRRA.
