- Biography
- Meyer Megdal is the son of Behr- Ephraim Dov Megdal (b. 1896) and Brucha (nee Koenig) Megdal. Meyer was born on January 2, 1926 in Hrubieszow, Poland where his father worked as a merchant. He had one sister, Perla (b. 1926). On December 2, 1939 Behr-Ephraim Megdal was shot and killed by the SS while on a forced marched from Hrubieszow to Sokal. His wife Brucha suffered from a nervous break-down after hearing of her husband's murder and was hospitalized on December 16. The family was informed that she passed away shortly thereafter, and they suspect she was poisoned. Meyer and Brucha remained together in Hrubieszow and in the Budzin and Mielec work camps before being separated in May 1944. Perla was sent with the other women to Auschwitz and from there to Stutthof. She died shortly before liberation in March 1945. Meyer survived subsequent imprisonment in Flossenbuerg, Leitmeritz and Ausburg and Stuttgart and eventually was liberated from Dachau. After the war he spent time in the Zeilsheim displaced persons' camp.
