- German women living in primitive dwellings in a mine surrender to American troops.
The original caption reads, "About 7,000 German civilians recently surrendered to Ninth U.S. Army troops after going with little food or water for four days in a shelter in the shafts of a mine slag pile in the Ninth Army sector east of the Rhine River, Germany. Previously, when they attempted to hoist the white flag, Nazi troops fired into their midst with machine guns."
