    Biography
Carl Laemmle was born on January 17, 1867 in Laupheim, Germany and immigrated to the United States as a young man. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen on June 28, 1889. Carl Laemmle, a pioneer of the Hollywood film industry, was a highly successful and wealthy Hollywood producer and founder of Universal Studios. Throughout the years, Laemmle maintained contact with friends in Laupheim and visited annually. After the Nazi rise to power, Laemmle dedicated his efforts to obtaining affidavits of support to facilitate the immigration of German Jews to the United States. He assisted hundreds of Jews from Laupheim and Wuerttemberg and tried to intervene on behalf of the stranded Jews on the ship the St. Louis. Among those he helped are the Arthur Einstein family (whose photographs are also in the USHMM photo archives), Dr. Hertha (nee Einstein) Nathorff, the family of Dr. Emil Treitel, Wilhelm Obernauer and sons, Ilse Eppstein, and John H. Bergmann. Carl Laemmle passed away on September 24, 1939, in Beverly Hills, California, at the age of 72.
