    Biography
Jacob Fertig was born the son of Max Mayer and Clementine (nee David) Fertig on January 16, 1927 in Mannheim, Germany. The Fertig family lived together in the suburb of Viernheim until Max's emigration from Germany to Palestine following Kristallnacht. Jacob remained with his mother until June of 1940, at that time he relocated to Hamburg where he came under the care of the Hamburg Jewish community. Within months of his relocation to Hamburg, Jacob's mother Clementine was deported from Mannheim to Gurs on October 28, 1940. Jacob and Clementine would not see one another again. In July 1942 Jacob Fertig was among the last of the children living at the orphanage at 3 Papendamm street to be deported to Auschwitz. Clementine Fertig was deported to Auschwitz only a few weeks after her son. Neither survived the Holocaust.
