- Biography
- Harry Goldstein (b. July 20, 1880) was a local business and community leader in Hamburg, Germany. Goldstein was an active member in the Association of Jewish War Veterans and helped to found the "Schild" sports group for Jewish youth. Goldstein's dedication to the Hamburg Jewish community grew over the course of the 1930s as Jewish residents required increasing support from the community as a consequence of Nazi persecution. Although Goldstein's son, Hans, emigrated from Germany to Sweden, Goldstein and his wife Clara remained in Hamburg and became involved in local Jewish welfare and relief. During this time Goldstein became the guardian of Karl Heinz and Wolfgang Rosner, two young Jewish boys who had remained in Germany after their mother and younger brother had fled. Although the boys were initially protected from deportation as a consequence of the Romanian citizenship they held through their father, they were ultimately sent to Buchenwald in 1944. Goldstein, who had not been deported as a consequence of his mixed marriage, continued to arrange for assistance to be sent to Karl Heinz and Wolfgang via international aid channels. The boys survived at Buchenwald until liberation. Afterwards they returned briefly to Hamburg. From there Harry Goldstein and the Jewish community helped to reunite Karl Heinz and Wolfgang with their mother and younger brother in Sweden.
