- Biography
- Shulamit Kagan Gilor was born to a Jewish family on March 25, 1945 in Bialystok, Poland. (Her family did not discuss much concerning the war. The following information is all that Shulamit knows regarding her family history.) Her mother, Lisa Fishko Kagan (born June 21) and Father, Leib (later Leon) Kagan (born December 13, 1913) were both from Pinsk, Poland. The couple married in 1940 in Pinsk. Leon was twice drafted to the army and escaped both times; the first time from the Polish army and the second time from the Russian army. Lisa had planned to study nursing. Shulamit's family was in the fur business until the war. During the war, Schulamit's mother, Lisa, managed to escape to the Urals, arriving in Almaty. Lisa was pregnant with a child that died in infancy from hunger. Lisa arrived in Novosibrisk and reunited with her husband. After the war, the couple returned to Pinsk to see if any of their family members had survived. Lisa's only sister had perished as well as her parents. Only one of Leon's six siblings survived.
The couple continued to Bialystok where Shulamit was born in 1945. They left Poland and journeyed to Italy to the Cremona displaced persons camp. They lived there between 1946-1948 when they decided to immigrate to Argentina in 1948, where one of Lisa's family members (the Machtey family) had moved prior to the war. In 1964 Shulamit moved to Israel where she studied psychology. Then, in 1967, her parents and sisters followed. Following his arrival. Shulamit's father, Leon, opened a leather goods store in Tel Aviv .
