Scott was assigned as a photographer with the 318th until June 1944. He left Tuskegee after some testing and was assigned to the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP) at Howard University in Washington D.C. He completed the 9 month basic engineering program with 5 others out of a group of 310 men in 6 months. He was then assigned to 183rd Engineer Combat Battalion in Camp McCain, Mississippi (Grenada).
