Photograph | Photograph Number: 78090

Young students study at an illegal Jewish school run out of a private home in Hilversum, Holland.

Pictured from front to back (left side): Rolien van Gelder (perished); Sylvain Brachfield (?); Marianne Mainz; Hetty van Someren (wearing an apron); Hetty's father, A. van Someren (the teacher). In the back row on the right are a pair of fraternal twins. The girl in front on the right is Evelyne Gottlieb (a German Jewish refugee). Born in Berlin on April 9, 1934, Evelyne perished at Auschwitz on September 7, 1942. The girl next to Evelyne is Yoka Verdoner. Yoka survived the war in hiding. The clandestine school operated from September 8 to December 20, 1941. The curtain at the back of the room was drawn to prevent people from looking in and discovering the school.
