Esther was arrested in 1942 while visiting her daughter, Rachel, at a Jewish children's home.  She was taken to Drancy and later died at an unknown location.  Marcel, who was with his mother at the time of her arrest, was hidden by a French woman who was the concierge of the building where he lived.  In 1948, Marcel, along with his brother Simon, was adopted by an Algerian Jewish family, the Djournos.
