    Interview Summary
    Lucia Bitbol (née Lumbroso), born on September 21, 1926 in Le Kram (at her family’s summer residence), Tunisia, discusses her father Ugo Lumbroso, who was a well-known ophthalmologist and had his own clinic; her mother, who was from the Cardosa family; her three brothers; the Cardosa and Lumbroso families, which were part of the elite Italian Jews from Livorno; not growing up observant; her family’s summer vacations on a little farm outside of Fiesole, Italy; not being allowed to study at the Italian high school; attending a French high school; being humiliated and taunted by her teachers; attending a vocational school; her memories of rationing, but never going hungry; the liberation of Tunisia; having a romance with a young English officer, Kenneth Smith, who later died in the battles at Monte Cassino; a Tunisian Jew denouncing her father as a fascist and promptly kicking the entire family out of their home so he could take over their apartment; her father being sent to prison then to a camp in the southern town of Gafsa, where he set-up a make-shift clinic and treated all the prisoners; the return of her father after a few months; meeting her future husband Gaston Bitbol in her building; getting married in 1952; her father purchasing an apartment for them in Paris, France; her son’s birth in 1954; and her life in France.
