Object | Accession Number: 2008.319.3

Identification tag that was issued to 3 year old Georges Maringer, a Jewish child smuggled from France into Switzerland and placed in 1944 in a children’s home established by Margaret Locher. The tag is engraved with his name and birthdate, the name of the matron of the home, and other identifying information. It was acquired by Vera Lechtman who had lived there at the same time when she was 6 years old. Vera, her mother, Tonia, and her younger brother, Marcel, were arrested by the French police in 1942 and sent to the Nexon internment camp. A friend was able to arrange their release and they went into hiding before escaping to Switzerland. In 1945, after the war the family returned to Poland.
