    Interview Summary
    Shep Zitler, born in Vilnius, Lithuania, in 1917, describes the beginning of the war; being drafted into the Polish Army six months before the war began; antisemitism in the army; being classified as Lithuanian (and Lithuania was not at war with Germany); being sent to a labor camp following Poland’s defeat and being held captive five years and seven months; and his liberation by Russian forces in April 1945.

    The Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVO), in cooperation with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) at Stennis Space Center, donated the recording with Shep Zitler to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Oral History Branch in March 2012. NAVO produced the recording during its annual Holocaust Days of Remembrance ceremony in April 2004.
