- David Michell was interviewed on July 3, 1992 as part of the Old China Hands oral history project under the direction of the Oral History Program, California State University, Fullerton. The Old China Hands oral history project documented the experiences of Allied civilians who were interned in China, principally in and near Shanghai during Japan's military occupation. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Archives received a copy of the interview on September 26, 1994.

Oral History
James Welch, born in Berkeley, CA in 1915, describes going to Shanghai, China in February 1939 following college graduation from UC Davis in animal husbandry; taking a job as dairy plant manager in Shanghai; his first impressions of China and Chinese; his memories of Pearl Harbor day; Shanghai being very quickly taken over by the Japanese; being interned not long after Pearl Harbor was attacked with about 65 men in a large go-down (warehouse) in Shanghai and experiencing a relatively easy daily life; some Americans being repatriated; being able to stay abreast of war news via hidden radios; hearing about the end of the war; and returning home.
