    Biography
Bernhard Rosenthal (1896-1952), was born in Limburg, Germany to Markus Jakub Rosenthal (1861-1926) and Sara Baum (1861-1922). He had three siblings: Emma Rosenthal (1889-1935), Julius Rosenthal (1891-1950), and Albert Rosenthal (1893-1957). Bernhard was a World War I veteran, and owned a clothing factory in Limburg. He married Hedwig Appel Bauer (1902-1983) in 1924. Hedwig was the daughter of Hermann Bauer (1868-1953) and Johanette Katz (1873-1953). She had one brother, Hugo Bauer. Her parents and brother moved to South Africa in the 1930s.

Bernhard and Helga had two children: Ingeborg Selma Rosenthal (later Inge Selma Glass, 1925-1988) and Walter Rosenthal (1929-2017). As antisemitism increased in Germany, the Rosenthals made plans to emigrate from Germany. Bernhard was only able to obtain visas to immigrate to the then British colony of Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe). He went there first, and the rest of his family left Germany in December 1938 to join him there. In 1947, Inge married Joseph Glass, a Lithuanian whose family immigrated to South Africa around 1935.
