Caliper used to measure noses for racial studies

Object | Accession Number: 1990.272.1.2

Calipers for measuring nose from medical bag containing anthropological instruments. Traditionally, this object was used to determine fatherhood or "Vaterschaftsguten" in questionable cases (prior to the advent of blood tests for this purpose). It was used during the Third Reich by doctors, anthropologists and geneticists for the eugenics movement. This instrument was used to measure body parts of various races. Results of such measurements were supposed to prove the "superiority of aryans" and the "inferiority" of Jews, Gypsies, Blacks and "mixed-breeds."
