    Interview Summary
    The interviews describe Mr. Ewer's childhood in Berlin, Germany; his father's death in 1928; his memories of antisemitism during his childhood; and the conflicts that arose because his father was Jewish and his mother was Christian and from a family of German nationalists. Mr. Ewer describes his mother's near loss of her job because of her marriage to a Jewish man; and his own immigration to England in April 1939. He describes being sent to Canada where he was held in an internment camp from July 1940-November 1941; his life in Canada after the war; and his immigration to the United States.

    The Bay Area Holocaust Oral History Project conducted the interview with Gerhard Ewer on March 24, 1994. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum received the tapes of the interview from the Bay Area Holocaust Oral History Project in December 2001.
