    Alexandra Steinberg discusses her early years in Amsterdam, Holland; her assimilated family life; her religious upbringing; her education as a nurse; the German invasion of Holland in May 1940; the beginning of the occupation and the changes she experienced in 1940 and 1941; her parents' deportation to Westerbork and Bergen-Belsen; the death of her fiancé; her decision to go into hiding; her arrest in March 1943; her deportation with her brother to Westerbork and Bergen-Belsen; her experiences in the camps; the work she performed and the lack of sanitation; her experiences on a train going to Auschwitz; their unexpected liberation by the Soviet Army; her reunion with her brother and their time in a village with other survivors; their decision to return to Amsterdam; her recounting of the loss of the Jewish population; their life during and after the war; immigrating to the United States in 1952; and her life in the US.

    The Bay Area Holocaust Oral History Project conducted the interview with Alexandra Steinberg on August 15, 1996 and September 19, 1996. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum received the tapes of the interview from the Bay Area Holocaust Oral History Project in February 2003.
