    Interview Summary
    Ernst Valfer, born July 4, 1925 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, discusses his childhood in Frankfurt; his memories of antisemitism and being forced to leave public school for a Jewish school; his parents' growing fear of remaining in Germany due to persecution and discrimination; the arrest of his father during Kristallnacht and his imprisonment in Buchenwald concentration camp; his mother's attempts to free him and flee with the family; his father's release on condition that the family leave Germany; being put on a children's transport to Paris, France in March 1939; his experiences as part of children’s orphanage; the relocation of the children in May 1940 to southern France after the Nazi invasion of France; enduring hardship; the threat of detention; being part of a children's transport to the United States arranged by an American organization; his arrival in San Francisco, CA to stay with his aunt and uncle; joining the United States Army in late 1943 (possibly early 1944); serving in the intelligence division and participating in the denazification of Germany; working with some of the displaced persons in Germany; his life after the war; his career as a psychologist; his marriage and children; and the psychological after effects of his experiences during the Holocaust.
