    Interview Summary
    Nadia Steinlauf discusses her childhood in Berdichev, Ukraine; the invasion of Berdichev by Nazi troops; the roundup of Jews in the town who were walked away; being spared along with her father; the deaths of her mother and siblings; parting from her father; assuming a false identity; working for the Nazi occupiers in various towns; the various tribulations she endured during this period; moving to Kiev to find work and then to Germany; her success in passing as a gentile; working in eastern Germany until Russian troops liberated the area; her decision to return to Berdichev; becoming very ill when she reached Landsburg, Poland (possibly Gorzów Wielkopolski); remaining there, meeting her husband and marrying; the couple's travels throughout Europe; their voyage from France to Israel aboard the ship Biria in 1946; her experience with I.F. Stone, an American author who was also on the ship; her experiences in Israel; the family's immigration to the United States in 1954 and their life in California.
