    Ellen Stern discusses her childhood in Cologne, Germany; her assimilated family; her early education in a Catholic school; the changes she experienced after 1933, including a transfer to a Jewish boarding school; the loss of her non-Jewish friends; the damage to her father's business; her family's decision to leave for Shanghai, China following Kristallnacht in November 1938; the journey by ship and the conditions she encountered upon their arrival in Shanghai; her experiences in Shanghai; the changes that occurred after the Japanese invasion in 1941; the work she performed as a secretary; her marriage in 1945; their immigration to the United States in 1947; the welcome they received upon arriving in San Francisco, CA; and her life in the US.
