Hans Gottheiner discusses his childhood in Breslau, Germany (now Wrocław, Poland); his memories of Kristallnacht in November 1938, including his father's arrest and imprisonment; his father's release several months later; his brother's escape to Shanghai, China in November 1939; his journey with his parents to join his brother in the summer of 1940; the family's experiences in the Jewish community in Shanghai; their work and studies; his bar mitzvah; the family's immigration to San Francisco, CA at the end of 1947; their initial adjustment to life in the United States; and his work, marriages, and family life in San Francisco.
