    John Polt (né Pollatschek), born August 20, 1929 describes his childhood in Aussig, Czechoslovakia (now Ústí nad Labem, Czech Republic); his family's decision to immigrate to Switzerland in September 1938; how the decision to leave Czechoslovakia was explained to him; his family's journey to Cuba in 1939; his experiences in Cuba; his family’s subsequent journey to the United States by airplane; his education; and his life in America.
